This past weekend I travelled down to West Sussex to have a go at the south of England style. Having joined their Society So I could enter, I entered the seniors,10 yards, I also decided I would have ago with Hand-tools only. That was my first mistake when I saw the cant that I drew, a couple of well grown trees, hey! ho! that’s the luck of the draw. At noon I decided to use my chainsaw for the last 2 yards or I would not finish; I had reached 8 yards, So I think I should have entered the veterans 8 yards.
I did manage to finish the 10 yards with bounding by rushing which is the biggest mistake you can make; when I stood back, I had bound under the wrong rod and two stakes where out of the bottom of the hedge and it was too wide, for the judges. Not enough time to rebind or nick in the side.
I can honestly say I really enjoined the day with the sun shining and the good camaraderie of the other 34 cutters.
Back to the local for an excellent meal and a pint and awards. I cannot remember the results I think they will be published shortly.
