Being a professional hedgelayer and conservation contractor, I am devoted to keeping the tradition alive.
Hedgelaying is a skilled craft, which some say is an expensive one! but is it expensive? when you have a living stock-proof hedge or a living fence which with yearly trimming can and will out live a generation. The cost today can be lower than stock fencing (netting & two barbed wire) taking note that the fence posts are only guaranteed for seven years.
The photographs shows the midland style of hedgelaying, the face side (clean) is for arable so the farmer can sow in the first year, this is where all the main reg-growth comes from making the hedge very dense thus making a excellent corridor for wild-life to travel on THE SUPER HIGHWAY and a great place for nesting song birds.
The back (bushy side) is for keeping the stock off the regrowth and an instant nesting place. There are styles for every county in the UK and these varies within that county.
I run workshops and training courses for hedge-laying to book please contact me.
The workshops are for the novice or if you have attended an earlier course. I will also be running some improver and contractor courses this coming season, please register an interest if you wish to attend these three day courses, one day will be collecting materials for hedgelaying by coppicing the stakes and binders.
